In case you haven't been following the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie odyssey, here's a quick catch-up.

Adapted from the popular video game, a trailer for a 'Sonic the Hedgehog Movie'  dropped earlier this year.

Fans were seriously creeped out by the human-like teeth and eyes on the titular character. They demanded he be fixed and director Jeff Fowler heeded the call.

A new trailer with a redesigned Sonic went live last week and the blue hedgehog hero looked sooo much better.

With the redesign appearing so extensive, everyone must be wondering, just how much did it cost? When one considers that the film's release was only delayed by a couple of months ultimately (initially scheduled for December 2019, it now hits cinemas Valentine's Day 2020), it's a particularly impressive turnaround.

Initially the figure of $35 million for the redesign cost was being thrown around. This would have brought the total budget for the movie to $125 million. But it turns out the final figure wasn't nearly so outrageous.

According to Indiewire, a source close to the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' production estimates the character redesign cost Paramount under $5 million.

This is because the only Sonic VFX work that were fully completed by the time that first trailer came out were just what you saw in that trailer (which dropped online April 30). Thus redesigning Sonic was not as expensive as it would've been if all of the film’s VFX had to be redone.

The source added that the VFX team were not overworked to get the job done. This had been another rumour making the rounds.

'Sonic the Hedgehog' hits Irish cinemas February 14, 2020.
