'Trolls World Tour' took something of a leap of faith when rather than delay its cinematic release in the current climate, it headed straight to on demand. But it seems the gamble paid off.

The sequel to 2016's hit animated feature 'Trolls' sees Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return as pop trolls Poppy and Branch.

As they go on a quest to save their world from being taken over by rock'n'roll Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), they meet others from the worlds of country, techno, funk and classical.

It packs an impressive cast line up with the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Mary J Blige, Sam Rockwell, Jamie Dornan and Icona Pop joining the sequel.

But more than that, what's probably going best for the feature is the fact that it's fun, colourful and perfect for all the family. It's the sort of musical extravangza that's perfect for escapism right about now.

'Trolls World Tour' landed online last week to record-breaking home-viewing success.

Available for a 48-hour rental (but not for download, at this time), it was the bestseller on Fandango’s full week Monday to Sunday chart, despite only being available for the latter three days.

It beat by a wide margin the #2 and 3 ranked 'Bad Boys for Life' and 'Sonic the Hedgehog,' the latter of which is available to Irish viewers at home now.

The family animated feature also set records to become the most pre-ordered title ever; best-selling opening day; and best-selling film over its first three days of digital release.

In spite of its premium price, it is also the number one rental on Amazon Prime.

Whether other movies will follow suit after its success, we have yet to see.
