After 11 FOX movies of varying levels of quality (excluding the two in the 'Deadpool' franchise), the X-Men are finally on their way into the MCU fold.

'The Mutants' is set to be the first title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe dedicated to the beloved X-Men. The mutants who carry that "X Gene" are going to be brought in in a big way by MCU boss Kevin Feige, who has titled the name after creator Stan Lee's original name for the alternate superheroes.

Not much else is known about 'The Mutants' just yet, but that's enough for us now to get excited about what's in store for the Marvel universe in the near future. With the 'WandaVision' finale arriving on Disney+ today, which is expected to lead directly into 'Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness', maybe we'll see one of two X-Men sprout up on our screens before their dedicated movie hits theatres.

The news will come as no huge surprise to comic book fans, who have been waiting for the confirmation ever since that Disney/Fox merger. Fox's lacklustre handling of the franchise pained a lot of fans of the original comics and TV cartoon series, with the film studio changing a number of key characters much more than was warranted (we still shudder at their mess of Deadpool from 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine').

With such a vast range of comic books, characters, and different versions of said characters to choose from, Feige and his team will have no easy task in choosing which route to go in for the franchise's first big Disney introduction. There are hundreds of potential comics that could influence whichever avenue he decides to go down, many of which we still have yet to see on film.

Fox's franchise focussed heavily on Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, before steering us down a prequel era with a younger Professor X and Magneto heading the series. The final entry in the franchise was the critically-panned 'Dark Phoenix' (there was also 'The New Mutants' from last year, which failed to catch much attention after a heap of delays).

Before the X-Men drop in however, 'Deadpool 3' will arrive, as well as the 'Fantastic Four' reboot, both of which are still in early stages of development. So, whenever we do see 'The Mutants', it will probably be a few years away yet.
