'Silence of the Lambs' celebrated its 30th anniversary this week.
Originally offered to Paul Verhoeven - who later regretted turning it down - 'Silence of the Lambs' was based on the novel of the same name by crime author Thomas Harris. The movie was a critical and commercial hit, being the third movie to win the five major categories - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay - at the Oscars.
Gene Hackman, of all people, bought the rights to the 1988 novel and intended to star in it as Jack Crawford, with the role eventually going to Scott Glenn. Meanwhile, director Jonathan Demme wanted Michelle Pfeiffer for the role of Starling, who then turned it down as she felt the subject matter was too gruesome and dark.
