The New York Times are reporting that a suspicious package has been sent to actor Robert DeNiro, just a day or so after pipe bombs were sent to the New York offices of CNN, and to the offices of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

The package was mailed to the production offices and restaurant belonging to De Niro in Tribeca, specifically mailed and addressed to the actor. Robert De Niro has in recent months been a vocal and prominent critic of Donald Trump and his policies, and the prevailing theory is that he was targeted because of this.

On Wednesday, the New York offices of CNN were evacuated following the discovery of a pipe bomb mailed to the news outlet. So far, eight devices have been discovered - all mailed to prominent Democrats and vocal critics of Donald Trump. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, former CIA director John O. Brennan, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, billionaire George Soros, former Attorney General Eric H. Holder and US Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz have been targeted in the wave of attempted attacks.

Robert DeNiro's criticism of Donald Trump has been scathing, with the actor receiving a standing ovation at this year's Tony Awards when he railed against the US President. The actor took part in a video advert during the campaign, in which he branded Trump "an idiot" and "a national disaster". More recently, Robert De Niro took part in 'SNL' where he played Robert Mueller, who is heading up the investigation into collusion between Russia and the campaign to elect Donald Trump as US President.

So far, there has been no statement from Robert DeNiro on the attempted pipe bombing and it's understood that no-one has been harmed.
