The New York Times got a lot of debate going last week when they listed their 25 best films of the 21st century so far.

Some agreed with the list, others didn't. Film was the real winner though as readers across the world championed their own personal favourites.

On the back of the list being published, The New York Times invited six filmmakers to share their own personal favourite movies of the century so far. Sofia Coppola, Paul Feig, Antoine Fuqua, Denis Villeneuve, Brett Ratner and Alex Gibney all put forward their preferences, many of which did not make the New York Times' list.

One thing of note from an Irish perspective is that Paul Feig, the man behind Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and last year's Ghostbusters, listed John Carney's Sing Street in his list of eleven movies. While he didn't offer any specific notes on why he plumped for Carney's musical comedy, he did say that he likes "uplifting endings, I love romance, just feel-good movies."

There's no doubt that Sing Street ticks all of those boxes. The film was in good company too, with Napoleon Dynamite, Moulin Rouge, Love Actually, Casino Royale, Mustang, A Single Man, Amelie, This Is The End, Moon and Deadpool rounding out the list.

Feig isn't the only big name fan of Carney's Golden Globe nominated film. Prior to a taping of his show last year, late night host Seth Myers also revealed that it was among his favourite movies of 2016.
