Cillian Murphy became the first Irishman (and more importantly, the first Corkman) to win Best Actor at last night's Oscars, securing the win after his performance in 'Oppenheimer' placed him as the favourite from the outset of awards season.

In his speech, Murphy thanked director Christopher Nolan - also now an Oscar winner - for "the wildest, the most exhilarating, the most creatively satisfying journey", as well as his "partner in life and art", Yvonne McGuinness. "I'm standing here, a proud Irishman," Murphy breathlessly exclaimed, and concluded his speech by dedicating the award to "the peacemakers" in the world. Murphy was joined on stage by previous Best Actor winners Nicolas Cage, Ben Kingsley, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser and Forrest Whitaker.

Elsewhere, there were other victories for Ireland. 'Poor Things', produced by Element Pictures, picked up a total of four wins in the various categories it was nominated for. Emma Stone won Best Actress for her lead role in the movie, whilst the production design, the makeup and hairstyling, and costume design for 'Poor Things' also took home wins in their respective categories.

'Oppenheimer' was the outright winner of the night, however, scoring a total of 7 wins across a total of 13 nominations. Among its wins included Christopher Nolan for Best Director for 'Oppenheimer', cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema for Best Cinematography, and Ludwig Göransson for Best Original Score. Of course, the night wasn't without some successes for its summer counterpart, 'Barbie'.

Ryan Gosling's performance of 'I'm Just Ken' - complete with an all-singing, all-dancing stage show - was one of the night's highlights, along with a little bit of scripted banter between Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling during one of the tributes on the night to the stunt performers of the movie industry. Billie Eilish picked up her second Oscar for Best Original Song, winning this time for 'What Was I Made For?' from the movie's soundtrack.
