'Face/Off' has been credited with creating world peace and being the greatest film of all time, and Hollywood is hard at work on creating a sequel to John Woo's 1997 masterpiece.

'Godzilla vs. Kong' director Adam Wingard has been tasked with filling John Woo's shoes, and the director wants to bring back Nicolas Cage for the sequel.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, the director says the script for the film is being written with the Oscar-winning actor in mind.

Despite his character meeting his fate from the end of a harpoon gun at the end of the original film, the original 'Face/Off' takes place in a world where people can get face transplants - never say never.

The director said that Cage is "having a moment" after the star drew rave reviews for his performance in A24 drama 'Pig' last year, with the actor scooping dozens of awards for his performance in the film.

’He's just having such a moment. Even before Pig came out, we saw this as a Nicolas Cage movie," the director said.

"That’s become totally the obvious way to go now. A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something.

"Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again," he added.

The film's producer Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on the 'Fast and Furious' and 'Sonic the Hedgehog' films as well as smash Amazon series 'The Boys' has spoken to Cage about starring in the film.

Wingard is working away on a script, and says they are "really honing in on it," saying "we’re not going to share it until everybody’s like, ‘This is the one.’”

The director, who is writing the script along with writer Simon Barrett, said there is a certain amount of pressure attached in making a sequel to the beloved action film.

“It has been probably the most challenging script we’ve ever worked on, for a lot of reasons. There’s so much pressure in wanting to make sure that it lives up to the legacy of that project

"In every draft you have these things that just click in, and you’re like, ‘A-ha! That’s really what 'Face/Off' is!"

The original 'Face/Off' was released in Ireland in November 1997, and is among most successful of Hong Kong director John Woo's forays into Hollywood, with the film making over $430 million dollars adjusted for inflation.
