Are you ready for another family adventure down the Amazon River? Good, because there's a swashbuckling 'Jungle Cruise' sequel on the way.
Disney has given the Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson action-adventure movie the green light for another entry in the franchise, which we're guessing will probably turn into a trilogy of movies (at least).
'Jungle Cruise' launched in July as one of Disney's biggest summer blockbusters and has been a success with its dual release both in cinemas and on Disney+ via Premier Access. The movie hit $100 million at the North American box office this past weekend, and with over $80 million in other territories, the total now stands at $187 million internationally. According to Disney+, the film also made $30 million its opening weekend with viewers choosing to watch it at home.
It's hard to tell whether the Disney tentpole was the runaway success the House of Mouse was hoping for, especially considering that the rumoured cost of making the movie was somewhere in the region of $360 million. However, it seems the company are pretty happy with its performance thus far and are full steam ahead with a 'Jungle Cruise' sequel.
Based on the Disney Parks attraction of the same name, Blunt, Johnson and supporting actors Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons and Paul Giamatti delivered a high-paced and fun Amazonian adventure that audiences loved. And with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it appears that most critics agreed too.
Another Disney Parks attraction that was set to be turned into a live-action movie was their 'Tower of Terror' remake starring and produced by Scarlett Johansson. However, in light of the recent lawsuit by the 'Black Widow' star, it's been suggested that the movie has been thrown in the bin. Apparently, both parties wish to cut ties with the other.
