'Joker' ended up being one of the biggest runaway movie successes of 2019. Its nihilism and cynicism shocked audiences the world over and provoked deep conversation; which is quite a feat for a villain origins story.
Those final scenes of 'Joker' have inspired much debate.
Interestingly, it emerged last Autumn that there was a deleted final scene involving the character Sophie. Now it looks like there was going to another add-on to that hospital-set finale.
Kevin Smith revealed it in his Fatman Beyond podcast on YouTube.
“Originally, the ending in the hospital was different," he said. "He’s in the hospital and he laughs, chuckles, and he says, ‘I was just thinking of something funny.’ What was supposed to happen was you flashed back to the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne and it was [Joker] killing Thomas and Martha Wayne and the boy was screaming and crying and [Joker] turned to walk away and he turned back, shrugged, and shot the kid. Credits."
Smith added: "What the f**k, man! Could you imagine?
"This world has no Batman, it’s just all f**king Jokers."
To give you a reminder, in the theatrical cut, it's an acolyte of Arthur Fleck/Joker who follows Thomas and Martha Wayne down an alley and kills them instead.
Bare in mind that Smith was told this by "somebody who works in the business and in the know" so we can't be 100% certain it's true. But given how dark the movie went, it's not that far of a stretch.
