The world has undergone some truly radical changes in the past year, the kind of which will have a lasting impact on our lives.
For Jason Derulo, however, he thought the catalyst would be 'Cats'. You know, that utterly dogsh*t movie with Taylor Swift, James Corden, and Jason Derulo. The one about alley cats with a threatening aura of sexuality.
Anyway, as it was Jason Derulo's opening foray into the movie world, he had high hopes for it. Maybe too high. "For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what’s the perfect first role. 'Cats' checked all the boxes. You can’t get a more start-studded cast, you don’t get a more respected director than an Oscar winner, and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical," Derulo told The Telegraph.
"Even when I saw the trailer, I got chills down my spine! I thought it was gonna change the world."
In a way, it did change the world. It made everyone realise that the idea of 'Cats' as a movie was destined for failure, and that weird ridey cats was never going to be a selling point with anyone except maybe the furry community.
'Cats', as we all know, didn't so much bomb as it cratered at the box office with $73 million take against a production budget of $100 million, and that's not even including the promotional and marketing budget, or the ill-fated Oscar campaign that was quickly dismantled when they realised they had a furball on their hands.
Still, we all got some good jokes out of it. Maybe it did change the world after all.
