The fifth (and final?) film in the franchise will see Harrison Ford's face look like it did way back in the '80s.
'Indiana Jones 5' will use new VFX technology to de-age the star of the franchise. So now we guess both young and old Indy will have plenty of Nazi scum to take down?
The upcoming action/adventure graces the cover of the 2023 preview edition of Empire Magazine, and plenty of new images have also dropped to build some anticipation for the flick. Harrison Ford returns for his fifth entry in the blockbuster series as the beloved archaeologist, with Mads Mikkelsen joining the cast as the film's baddie. No images have been released of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character just yet.
Along with exclusive first-look images, the feature also confirmed that new visual effect technology has been used to de-age Harrison Ford. Although it will only be used in the film’s opening scene, which is set in a castle in 1944 and pits Indiana against a group of Nazis, director James Mangold and his team hope that the audience won't be able to tell that technology is being used at all.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy said: "My hope is that, although it will be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and go, 'Oh my God, they just found footage. This was a thing they shot 40 years ago'."
According to Empire Magazine, the new ILM software used: "Trawled through archived material of the younger Harrison Ford before matching it to the freshly-shot footage."
Ford, who saw this footage in action, said it was all "a little spooky" to see: "This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it… I don’t think I even want to know how it works, but it works. It doesn’t make me want to be young, though. I’m glad to have earned my age."
'Indiana Jones 5' will be released in cinemas on June 30, 2023.
