Ian Holm, the star of 'Chariots of Fire', 'Alien' and 'Lord of the Rings', has passed away at the age of 88.
Holm won the 1981 BAFTA for Best Actor for his role as Sam Mussabini, the athletics trainer who helped Eric Lidell and Harold Abrahams compete in the 1924 Olympics. The movie won Best Picture that year, and helped to further Holm's career.
Just two years prior, Holm played the android Ash in Ridley Scott's groundbreaking sci-fi horror 'Alien' opposite John Hurt, Tom Skerritt and Sigourney Weaver. Throughout the '80s, Holm starred in two of Terry Gilliam's most notable efforts, 'Time Bandits' and 'Brazil', while also continuing his extensive theatre work.
Modern audiences would most likely known Holm from Peter Jackson's adaptation of JRR Tolkien's high-fantasy epic, 'Lord of the Rings'. Holm played Bilbo Baggins, the original ringbearer, who entrusts the ring to Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood. Holm played Baggins in all three parts, with the role being played in a younger version by Martin Freeman.
Holm's final credited role was in 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies', where he played the older version of Bilbo Baggins.
He is survived by his five children and grandchildren.
