Although the novel was released in the US last week, Michael Mann's follow-up to 'Heat' - imaginatively titled 'Heat 2' - has hit Irish bookshelves from yesterday, August 18th.
Co-written with Meg Gardiner, 'Heat 2' is Mann's first novel and sees him stalk familiar territory whereby he picks up the story the very next day after the events of 'Heat'. It doesn't end there, however. The novel also traces both the past and the future of certain characters, going all the way back to 1989 when Vincent Hanna - Al Pacino's character - first intersects with Neil McAuley's high-line crew, and then jumps to 2002 when Chris Shiherlis is on the run from the LAPD and working for an international crime syndicate.
The novel has already leapt to the top of the New York Times' Bestsellers List in short order, and if that wasn't enough, Mann is adamant he can turn 'Heat 2' into a movie if given the time and resources to do it. Of course, there's already been talk about recasting, with Al Pacino stating that he'd like to see Timothee Chalamet playing the younger version of Vincent Hanna. But who could possibly play Chris Shiherlis, then? Austin Butler, maybe? As long as nobody casts Pete Davidson to play Michael Cerrito - they've both got tattoos! - it'll be fine.
'Heat 2' is available in most Irish bookstores right now.
