In a night of upsets for 'A Star Is Born' and a night of expected victories for 'Killing Eve', the Golden Globes this year proved to be somewhat divisive in its outcomes.
While nobody doubts that Rami Malek gave a spot-on performance as Freddie Mercury in 'Bohemian Rhapsody', did it deserve to win Best Actor (Drama)? Will these mean he's now the favourite to win in the Oscars? And what about 'A Star Is Born' and its single win for Best Original Song? What happened there?
To answer all of these, you have to look at the makeup of the voting in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association versus the Oscars or any of the guild awards. HFPA is made up of 90 journalists based in Southern California, representing 55 countries across the globe. The Oscars, meanwhile, literally has thousands of members from and, in the past few years, has gone to great lengths to refresh its voting poll by accepting younger and more diverse members to the Academy.
It's the same with the guild awards, as well, all of whom are voted by actors, directors, producers, screenwriters - not a cabal of journalists.
So, how'd we do, predictions-wise versus who actually won?
Best Motion Picture (Drama)
We predicted... 'A Star Is Born'
Who won? 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
This really was the expected winner here and while 'Bohemian Rhapsody' did fantastic business at the box office, nobody expected it do as well as it did on the night. Zero, so far.
Best Actress (Drama)
We predicted... Lady Gaga for 'A Star Is Born'
Who won? Glenn Close for 'The Wife'
Again, very much an unexpected win for Glenn Close and she felt the same way, going by her reaction. Then again, in retrospect, the movie is set in Stockholm, was directed by a Swedish man, and was distinctly set against the grain to win and had a decidedly European flavour to it. Close was brilliant in it, to be sure, but this really was out of nowhere. Still on zero.
Best Actor (Drama)
We predicted... Either Bradley Cooper for 'A Star Is Born' or Rami Malek for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
Who won? Rami Malek for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
We're awarding ourselves a half-point here for this, as Rami Malek was the next likely to win out here. It really was a strong performance and while it deserved a win here, it definitely wasn't on the cards to win for Best Motion Picture (Drama).
Best Motion Picture (Comedy / Musical)
We predicted... 'Mary Poppins Returns'
Who won? 'Green Book'
Again, it really was a night of upsets as the general consensus that 'Mary Poppins Returns' or 'Crazy Rich Asians' was going to win out here. 'Green Book' got decent reviews, but the controversy surrounding it looked like it was going to sour its chances altogether. Instead, it picked up a win here and another Golden Globe for Mahershala Ali.
Best Actress (Comedy / Musical)
We predicted... Olivia Colman for 'The Favourite'
Who won? Olivia Colman for 'The Favourite'
To be fair, this was a lock for Colman from the get-go. She was fantastic in it, she deserved to win, and she did win. One on the board for us, as well.
Best Actor (Comedy / Musical)
We predicted... Robert Redford for 'The Old Man & The Gun'
Who won? Christian Bale for 'Vice'
This was a tough category to call, but Christian Bale thanking Satan in his acceptance speech was totally worth being wrong on this one. Also, he desperately needs to be cast in the eventual Trump White House biopic as Mitch McConnell.
Best Supporting Actor in any Motion Picture
We predicted... Sam Rockwell for 'Vice'
Who won? Mahershala Ali for 'Green Book'
Sam Rockwell really was a supporting actor, whilst Mahershala Ali was basically the co-lead with Viggo Mortensen. Granted, putting him in this category assured him a win because he was so good in it. If they ever revealed the runner-ups, our guess is the close second would be Sam Rockwell.
Best Supporting Actress in any Motion Picture
We predicted... Claire Foy for 'First Man'
Who won? Regina King for 'If Beale Street Could Talk'
Regina King was great in 'If Beale Street Could Talk', but how thoroughly 'First Man' was shut out of the Golden Globes is more surprising. Damien Chazelle wasn't even in contention for Best Director, and he cleaned up for 'La La Land' and 'Whiplash'. At any rate, a solidly deserved for a fantastic, human performance by Regina King.
Best Director (Motion Picture)
We predicted... Bradley Cooper for 'A Star Is Born'
Who won? Alfonso Cuaron for 'Roma'
Again, another surprising loss for 'A Star Is Born' and Bradley Cooper, but 'Roma' really was a hit with critics so it's not that surprising that Cuaron won out here. Not only that, the Golden Globes is a warm house for Netflix as opposed to the Oscars, so it's not all that surprising that 'Roma' and Cuaron won here.
Best Motion Picture (Animated)
We predicted... 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse'
Who won? 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse'
The rightful winner here, 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse' was a critical and commercial hit and was always a lock for this. It'll go into the Oscars as the one to beat now, and more power to it.
