If ever there was a movie franchise that has the wheels coming off, it's the 'Fast and Furious' franchise.
What began as a cheap 'Point Break' knock-off with middle-tier actors has now become a billion-dollar franchise that has long since left behind its street racing credentials. Where it's going next, you ask?
Very simple. Space.
While this leap into the great beyond has been teased and rumoured for quite a while, it now looks like it's actually going to be a reality. In an interview with The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusX, franchise stalwart Michelle Rodriguez confirmed the news when confronted with it on the air.
"How did you guys find that out?! See what happens? People start talking behind the scenes, man," Rodriguez laughed. "When a movie doesn't come out and forget about it, things get out. Nobody was supposed to know that!"
To be fair, this isn't all that surprising. There was nowhere else where the 'Fast and Furious' franchise could concievably go. Vin Diesel can only say "family" so many times before it gets hollow and unconvincing. Is Dwayne Johnson going to push another torpedo away with his bare hands while driving a car? Absolutely not.
No, the reality is that space and cars was an inevitability. The question is, how can they possibly strap a Nissan Skyline to a rocket and still keep an air of understated authenticity that's been a hallmark of this filmmaking franchise?
