Unfortunately for Marvel Studios, they have their first official "rotten" score on review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes.

The arrival of the MCU's newest blockbuster in cinemas this weekend comes with mild tinge of disgruntlement. Marvel's 'Eternals' approval rating by critics has tipped it into the "rotten" side of the Rotten Tomatoes scale.

With the film now standing at 58% approval rating, it means that the action film is now the lowest-rated MCU film ever (even 'Thor: The Dark World' managed to sit on a relatively average 66% - but it does have an audience rating of 75%, FYI). However, as we can see, fans have yet to give their own rating for the film, which could see it claw some reputation back in the coming weeks.

Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao helmed the project, which stars an all-star cast including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, Gemma Chan and Kit Harington. 

While 'Eternals' does catapult the MCU into a brave new direction, looks great on-screen and pushes diversity further than the MCU has seen thus far, the general consensus is that there's too much going on to really enjoy Marvel Studios' longest feature to date.

Our Movies Editor Brian Lloyd awarded the film a rating of 2.5 stars, saying the "whole thing feels so overblown and overwrought that you kind of walk out of the screen in a daze", comparing it to DC movies 'Man of Steel' and 'Zack Snyder's Justice League', which struggled to deal with too many ideas.

So, out of all 26 releases within the MCU, the 'Eternals' rating sees it placed in a solid 26th position, overtaking a title which was held by the aforementioned 'Thor: The Dark World'. The highest-rated of the series is 'Black Panther' on 96% - the sequel of which is currently in the middle of filming.

Given that 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' faired incredibly well with audiences, critics and the box office during the summer, it'll be interesting to see if the mixed reaction to this new release has a knock-on effect in movie theatres.

'Eternals' arrives in cinemas this Friday, November 5.
