Ryan and Kaz Firpo, the writers of Marvel's newest superhero blockbuster, wish that they can return to the characters once again in a future series.
Could Marvel's 'Eternals' get a Disney+ prequel series? The film's writers are hoping so.
This past weekend saw the release of the next iteration of superheroes to fly, laser beam, and battle their way into the MCU fold. Originally sent to Earth as Celestials, the film chronicles what these super-powered beings got up to once their mission was "complete" many, many years ago before they were forced into regrouping to stop the latest threat on humanity in the modern-day.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the writers of 'Eternals' are holding out hope that the franchise might get a Disney+ prequel series. Laying out their potential plans, Ryan and Kaz Firpo envision picking up with the heroes during those years when the group was disbanded.
They said: "We’ve even said jokingly that there should be an 'Eternals' prequel show on Disney+. Go back and do a Kingo episode in 1890s Mumbai where he is juggling his life as a movie star, dealing with Gandhi’s peaceful dissolution of the British empire in India. And there’s an episode with Thena where she’s in Greece. I would love to make that show. There are a lot of opportunities.
"If the audiences allow us, there’s going to be a story to tell with Dane Whitman. There’s going to be a story to tell in the Cosmos with the Eternals confronting Arishem and all the Celestials who are these incredible metaphors for creation. I think there’s a lot of stories in the Eternals universe."
Should they get their plans set in motion, it would mean the return of two of the most interesting characters from the film, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo and Angelina Jolie as Thena. It could also see Kit Harington's Dane Whitman (AKA Black Knight) get his own spin-off series, continuing that cliffhanger scene during the credits of 'Eternals'.
While it was the longest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 'Eternals' has also rather unfortunately been the only film in 26 to receive a "rotten" by critics on review aggregate website, Rotten Tomatoes. However, cinema-goers thought differently and awarded the film an 80% "fresh" audience score based on over 5,000 reviews.
Mixed reviews or not, the film has drawn in huge audience figures and has, so far, made an estimated $161.7 million. However, it will need to make plenty more money if it's to cover the rough cost of making the blockbuster - $200 million.
