It appears that the number one baddie of 'The Batman' will not be The Penguin after all.

Currently hiding out at his home in LA, the Irish actor did quite an in-depth interview with an online publication where he spoke of how he's been dealing with living in quarantine, fatherhood, and his villainous role in Matt Reeves' new Batman movie. And judging by what he said, Colin Farrell's Penguin is only a minor character. For now, at least...

When asked about how he felt going into this rebooted comic book universe, the Dublin export said: "It’s all exciting. To be a part of that universe and just there are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon: Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, all these things."

He then opened up about his role in the movie (which has been put on hold until the world begins to go back to normal), which he only filmed part of in London before production ceased. He continued: "I had only started it and I can’t wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven’t got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means.

"But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to get back. Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can’t wait to get back and really get into it."

Judging by his comments, Colin Farrell's Penguin may return if there are further instalments down the line in Reeves' new franchise resurgence. The surprising news about Oswald Cobblepot certainly paves the way for Paul Dano's The Riddler and Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman to have expanded roles in the Robert Pattinson/Batman adaptation. Hell, maybe Andy Serkis' Alfred Pennyworth will turn out to be the bad guy... we'll have to wait and see.
