For anyone who watched X-Men in the '90s or is familiar with the comics, Gambit is one of those characters who has yet to get a fair shake in terms of adaptations.
He turned up in the awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by trying-so-hard-to-make-him-a-thing Taylor Kitsch, and was quickly forgotten about after the fact. Fast forward a couple of years and Channing Tatum was announced as taking over the role, and that a script and director was being put together for the whole thing.
Well, months turned into years, and now it seems that the long-awaited Gambit movie is going to be even more awaited as it's been confirmed that director Gore Verbinski has dropped out of the production. The release date of February 14th, 2019 will now likely be pushed back as this marks Director No.3 to leave the film, but Deadline's report claims the split here was amicable.
So, what now? Well, the release date can be easily changed and there's a good chance that this whole thing could be thrown over the side when the Fox - Disney merger begins to take shape. Considering Gambit's now had three directors to leave the film, there probably isn't a queue of talent waiting to take it on with this whiff on it.
