Although Avengers: Infinity War is the next Marvel blockbuster to hit screens next month, it'll be still some time before we see Brie Larson as Captain Marvel soaring through the air.
In a detailed interview with EW, screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet talked about what the tone of the film will be, describing it as "an action-comedy" more than anything else. Robertson-Dworet, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation with Alicia Vikander, explained that "Captain Marvel has a very funny voice, and it’s more of an action-comedy, more like what we were talking about doing in the first draft I wrote for Tomb Raider... (but) that tone survived in Captain Marvel."
As Robertson-Dworet is keen to point out, this isn't just her doing this all by herself - it's very much in the comics.
"Carol Danvers is one of the funniest comic book characters," explained Robertson-Dworet. "She’s so sassy, she’s such a smartass, she won’t take sh*t from anyone, and the comic books do an amazing job at capturing that voice, and it was important that the entire Captain Marvel creative team (kept to that)."
Moreover, that creative team includes the MCU's first female director, Anna Boden, who previously directed Mississippi Grind. Of course, Captain Marvel isn't the first female-fronted or directed comic-book movie; that honour goes to Wonder Woman, and naturally, it played a part in Captain Marvel's progress.
"We already saw one example of what a superheroine looked like on screen,” Robertson-Dworet explained. "So we wanted to carve our own path and make sure we weren’t retreading the same territory, and showing all facets of what women are capable of."
Captain Marvel lands in Irish cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
