Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun while filming a scene for a feature in New Mexico, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
The incident occurred on the set of an independent feature titled 'Rust' which was being filmed at the Bonanza Creek Ranch. Alec Baldwin is a producer on the film and also stars in it.
According to a statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's office, Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza "were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor."
Hutchins was transported via helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she died.
Souza was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe.
There, he received emergency treatment for his injuries. He has since been discharged, according to one of the stars of 'Ruse', Frances Fisher.
Alec Baldwin was reportedly questioned by police and seen crying after the accident.
Juan Rios, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said: "This investigation remains open and active. No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives."
Rust Movie Productions LLC, who are producing 'Rust' issued a statement highlighting that the cast and crew are "absolutely devastated" by what happened.
It reads: "The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones.
"We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation.
"We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event."
A spokesman for Alec Baldwin said there was an accident involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. There has been no further comment at this time.
