It's hard to imagine it, but Mortal Kombat has been around for a long, LONG time.

Released TWENTY-FOUR years ago this year, Mortal Kombat has been one of the most recognisable games - fighting or otherwise - for the better part of two decades. Not bad going for a game that was knocked together by four people in less than a year.

One of the many reasons why Mortal Kombat became so popular was because, well, the violence. It was everywhere in the game. You couldn't throw a punch with a spray of blood coming from Scorpion's face. Even more bloodier was the infamous Fatalities, each individual to the character and about as gruesome as you can imagine.

Although the sprite-driven ones from Mortal Kombat I and II might seem a little twee to younger audiences, these were pretty damn shocking way back when. What's more, Mortal Kombat X has really tried to keep up that level of gruesomeness and, in parts, disturbing nature of them.
