If you like catchy call signs and crying out "Fox one. Fox one" this is the game for you. If you prefer pouring over game manuals, the size of War and Piece, figuring out how to extend your plane's flaps, i.e. Microsoft Flight Simulator, it's probably not.
Hawx is an arcade aerial shooter which tells the story of Major David Crenshaw who joins a private military firm and is tasked with <insert standard Tom Clancy plot here>. It’s easy to pick up and play and features a lengthy single player campaign, a co-op and a team death-match mode. The developers used real satellite imagery to render locations like Rio De Janeiro, Tokyo and Rio De Janeiro and the results look fantastic. The sound effects is suitably realistic and there's lots of in-game banter between the pilots.
I could on about how the gameplay is a little shallow, and the lack of difference between the planes, but Ubisoft deserve credit for releasing Hawx. An aerial warfare game is a welcome addition to the endless stream of derivative shooters released for the Xbox 360 - the only other real alternative to this game is the ageing Ace Combat 6.
At the very least, Top Gun fans will be happy.
