The Godfather 2, a sequel to 2006's The Godfather: The Game, has it's work cut out before you even put in the disk. Attempting to dislodge such behemoths as Saints Row, and, of course, the mighty Grand Theft Auto series, off their perch is no easy task. But for EA, maybe it was one offer they couldn't refuse. Have they succeeded?
Not really.
You play as Dominic, an up-and-coming boss in the Corleone regime, and as soon as the Nino Rota's famous score plays over the opening credits, you, albeit temporarily, forget all things GTA and brace yourself for the battle ahead. But it's not long before things start to unravel.
Visually, the game is substandard, and on several occasions I was wondering whether it was actually a PS2 game I was playing. Thankfully, the characters themselves fare slightly better, and the voice acting is what you'd expect from a movie tie-in. EA should also be commended for adding a touch of originally in an already competitive genre – strategy plays a big part, mainly due to the 'Don View', a 3D map that allows the player to see a 3D representation of the city where you can send members of your team to 'attack' different locations and see who is controlling where.
Several Multi-player modes are available, including the ability to use cash earned to upgrade your single player game. As the single-player mode is relatively easy though, only the multi-player would warrant any re-visit.
GTA it's not, but it's a fun rent, especially for the little touches of originality EA have included. Play it, smile, then go back to GTA.
