Find that little nineties child inside of you and tell them the good news - Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own movie! Yes, we know grown-up you is like, 'whatever, I play REAL video games now', and there is a fear that your childhood memories could be ruined by whatever strange incarnation of Sonic we get on the big screen. But still - it's Sonic the Hedgehog - with his own movie. Hasn't he come far since those days frolicking around in that Green Hill Zone?
The Paramount film is scheduled for release on November 15th, 2019 and will use a mix of live action and CGI to bring the character to life. It will mark the directorial debut of Jeff Fowler, known for directing the 2005 Oscar-nominated short Gopher Broke, and will be produced by Neal H. Moritz with Deadpool director Tim Miller executive producing alongside Toby Ascher. Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will serve as co-producers.
Sonic was first introduced as a character by Sega in 1991 as a rival to Nintendo's Super Mario and saw the pixelated hedgehog racing around collecting rings with his mates Tails and Knuckles while trying to stop the evil Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik from trying to take over the world.
In case you are wondering why there hasn't been a Super Mario animated movie yet, Nintendo are already on it although discussions are still at an early stage.
