For the uninitiated, Serious Sam HD: The First and Second Encounters are actually two cult classics, the first of which was a game of the year in 2001.
Playing the two games is liking taking a time machine to a land without storylines or characters where the only things that's important is big guns, re-spawning enemies, blowing things up and, yes, quick-saves. It's also frightening how fast everything is - the marines in Call of Duty and Gears of War are positively lethargic compared to meathead Sam.
Chances are most older games either played these games when they were first released or picked them up more recently off Xbox Live but the packages represents a good window into the past for newer gamers. To be fair Serious Sam has aged rea-sonably well, the HD lick of paint helps and his one liners are still amusing.
Things do get repetitive after a while and the famous 16 player death-match mode has been removed but - and it's not often I get to say this - they don't make them like this anymore.
