John Carpenter has given the world such timeless classics like the original 'Halloween', 'The Thing' and 'Escape From New York', but the director's output has been quiet since directing 'The Ward' in 2010.
Fans have been clamouring for a new Carpenter film, and fans may well get their wish as Carpenter looks to combine his love of gaming with the genre that made him famous.
In an interview with the AV Club, Carpenter shared his latest gaming habits, and the director is known for regularly taking to Twitter to praise the latest game he's playing.
When asked what game he'd like to adapt, Carpenter said he would like to adapt 'Dead Space' into a film.
"The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is Dead Space. That would make a real great movie. I could do that," he said.
Carpenter is a fan of the horror franchise, and even praised 2013's divide 'Dead Space 3' which received a mixed reaction from fans and critics for being more action-focused, but Carpenter said he enjoyed the game, dubbing it "the action one that nobody else liked."
The premise for 'Dead Space' seems tailor-made for Carpenter, with the action following an engineer on a ship in deep space that has been overrun by alien creatures, and the protagonist Isaac Clarke must use his engineering skills to blast and dismember his way to safety.
With a remake due out early next year, public interest in the franchise might cause a film studio to sit up and take notice.
In the interview, Carpenter reiterated his praise for 'Horizon: Forbidden West', hailing it as "fantastic" and "mind-blowing."
Carpenter said he has a fondness for open-world games, and cited 'Fallout 76' as his current favourite.
When asked what appeals to him about open-world games, he said "the freedom to roam and do it your way" is a big selling point for him.
Despite making his name as one of the greatest horror directors of all time, Carpenter says he doesn't like jump scares in video games.
"I don’t like things jumping out at me and threatening my character, no! Don’t threaten my character - I want to survive."
"It’s one of the things I like about Fallout, they don’t penalise you. You die over and over again on a hard mission. I like that."
Carpenter said he is a massive fan of 'Fallout 76', saying he is "addicted" to the game, saying he's lost count of the hours he's spent playing the game.
Gaming has become Carpenter's main hobby, calling it a "big part of my life" saying "it's a lot more fun than directing movies."
"Directing movies, that's hard work, that's stressful, (gaming) it's relaxing, I'll play any time I can."
The 'Halloween' director started his gaming journey with 'Sonic' back in 1992, and quickly became a fan of gaming.
"I started in 1992, Sonic The Hedgehog. Trying to figure out how the fuck to play that game. Oh, god. It was tough for me. I mean, nobody else, I’m sure."
"The early games, you know, they were merciless. They make them easier sometimes, now."
So how does John Carpenter celebrate beating a hard part of a game?
He told The AV Club "I feel proud of myself. And celebrate by, I don’t know, smoking a joint."
