If you were on Twitter at midnight of September 17th, then you probably seen some of the photos we were sticking up online of the HUGE lines outside of games stores all over Dublin's city centre. Who are we kidding? Most of us were IN those lines, all waiting desperately to get into the stores, grab our copy of GTAV, and run home to play it as fast as our little legs could carry us.
The numbers have come in for that opening day of sales, and Grand Theft Auto V managed to bank $800 million in that first day alone. Yes, you read that right. Eight. Hundred. MILLION!
The game is rumoured to have cost $265 million to produce, making it more expensive to make than all but one of the movies that Hollywood has produced (Pirates 3 still holds the $300 million pricetag record). But that one days' $800 million puts movie's makings into a dark, distant second place, with Harry Potter & The Deathly Hollows Part 2 holding the record for highest one-day earnings at $91 million. It even smashes the previous one-day video games sales record, once held by Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 with $500 million.
With 7 million (or around $550 million worth) copies of the game purchased through pre-sales, and the gamers now anxiously waiting for stores to replenish their stocks in the game, expect that number to continue to rise and rise. And check back in with entertainment.ie tomorrow for our full review of the game!
