A video game based on fan-favourite 'Lord of the Rings' character Gollum is currently in development.
'Lord of the Rings: Gollum' is set to be an action-adventure that will follow the split personalities of Gollum/Smeagol before any of the events we've read or seen in books or movies. The plot will revolve around Gollum after he discovers his "Precious," and before the timeline in 'The Hobbit' or the 'Lord of the Rings'.
German video game developer Daedalic Entertainment is teaming up with Middle-earth Enterprises to bring out the new adventure game. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO and co-founder of Daedalic Entertainment, spoke on their approach to the new video game. It seems the video game will be decision-based, depending on which side of the titular character's mind you will side with. He said, "You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision."
Fichtelmann also spoke on how the game studios will making the game more story-focused. He said, "Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing 'Lord of the Rings'. After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."
Daedalic Entertainment's other previous releases include the 'Deponia' franchise, as well as 'The Long Journey Home' and 'AER'.
There's been a lot of 'Lord of the Rings' buzz circulating at the moment. The movie 'Tolkien' is due for release in cinemas this May, which will focus on the untold story of novelist J.R.R. Tolkien; while Amazon are currently busy working on their $1 billion new middle-earth series.
'Lord of the Rings: Gollum' is slated for release in 2021 on PC and all current consoles.
