With God of War 3, Sony's hugely successful mythological hack & slash vehicle that has graced both the PSP, PS2 and even mobile phone, it's with this, it's long-awaited debut on the PS3, that Kratos' fans will have been eagerly anticipating the most.
The franchise's greatest strength has always to push its parent's hardware to the test, and God of War 3 is no different. This is one good-looking game. Battles are more furious than ever, with the PS3's greater power allowing for more characters to appear on screen at once, resulting in a more spectacular – and very, very bloody – story. But this accommodation also results in a more varied game-play experience, with the need to take greater care in how you choose what combos to inflict. Each is as perfectly responsive as ever, and results in a combat system that's both rewarding and simple to master.
The game's greatest strength, however, is the scale of the world. Some of the battles are the most cinematic ever seen in a videogame, with the sheer size of some of the enemies a wonder to behold.
It's with games like this the PS3 shows its true power. Add in the various challenge and arena modes that are on offer after completion and you yet another stellar addition to this highly original franchise.
