The latest FIFA Street game represents an attempt by the developers to move away from the cartoony offerings of previous FIFA Street games towards a more realistic experience. The reboot features players from over 2,000 teams, there’s a world tour mode and a local and online multiplayer. Anyone who has played FIFA 13 will be immediately familiar with the controls and game dynamics. However, the premise of FIFA Street sees matches take place in gyms, backstreets, five-a-side pitches and alleyways in locations like Paris and Shanghai.
Curiously for a game that prides itself on realism, players earn extra points for performing tricks and shots and these can be used to purchase extra abilities for the unlicensed players i.e. not Messi. Unlike other football games there is no commentary, instead players are treated to a bombastic and fitting soundtrack. Arguably, this may put off purists who prefer the atmosphere and chants of a stadium. FIFA Street is best played with friends and the game really comes into its own via local multiplayer. That said, single-players will find the AI suitably challenging. Although the graphics are compelling, the game doesn’t look quite as a good as its bigger brother. It does however, have more flair.
If you are considering picking up this game second hand in a few months time, be-warned it comes with an online pass, which can only be redeemed once. If you’re considering picking it up now, there’s more than enough here to pass the time until the inevitable FIFA 14.
