Early this month, a playable demo of Fear 2 was released. The demo had everything, a decent array of weapons, atmospheric visuals, trouser ruining audio and some of the eeriest scenarios I've ever encountered. Unfortunately the game itself, is struggling to live up to its abridged version.
So, at the end of the last game, we managed to escape Alma only to have her set off a Nuclear bomb, the rascal! Now we kick off as a new character and come into the proceedings 30 minutes before the bomb goes off.
In the first three or four levels, all you're up against are black ops soldiers and the odd spider-walking nut job. It's hardly the horror we've come to expect, just another run-of-the-mill shooter. Granted, it does crank up the creepy the further into the game you go but the bizarre inclusion of future tech like the robotic armored suits takes away from the overall feel of the game.
The obvious parallels to films like The Ring have, to the detriment of the game, been put aside, leaving a fairly plain looking FPS behind. Pity.
