We've talked before about just how incredible both Oblivion, Morrowind and Skyrim were in popularising RPG and making it a mainstream genre.

Since Skyrim's release, the game has  gone on to win multiple awards, firmly entrench itself into mainstream popular culture and now it's been remastered for next-gen consoles such as XBox One and the upcoming Nintendo Switch. It's also enjoyed an incredible after-market modding community that have completely reinvented and reshaped the game in new and completely unexpected ways, something Bethesda's Todd Howard was questioned about in a recent interview with Glixel.

"There are really simple ones where you go, 'Duh, we should have done that.' There's one that adds fast travel markers when you own a house. That's like a 10-minute thing that we probably should have done. There's a really popular mod that makes the cities open, so you can just walk in. We didn't do that, originally, for technical reasons on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3," explained Howard.

Inevitably, the question of a Skyrim sequel was brought up and Howard gave us the first clear indication that the next chapter of the Elder Scrolls is on its way. "It's not what you would call a big, active project right now. There are some other ones that we have going. We know it's important to our fans, and we need to be careful about setting expectations," Howard explained. He went on, saying that Elder Scrolls VI is "certainly a game that we'll be making one day."

This seems to echo previous comments from inside Bethesda that while it's not being actively made, it is definitely on the horizon and should be expected in the next three to four years.

Whether it'll be within the lifetime of the XboxOne and PlayStation 4 remains to be seen, as Microsoft has Scorpio One whilst the PS4 Pro is now on the market and currently the most powerful console available.
