Next year, Metal Gear Solid turns 20 - and, in the time since its release, it's revolutionised gaming as we know it.

The attention to details that were often previously disregarded - such as story, music and soundtrack, themes, atmosphere - was groundbreaking at the time, and still to this day, Metal Gear Solid is regarded as the high watermark for the genre of stealth gaming.

One major part of the game, however, has had an Irish connection that many players not have realised. The end theme to Metal Gear Solid is Irish. As in, the lyrics are as Gaelige and there's an Irish woman singing them.

The song, The Best Is Yet To Come, was recorded in Beechpark Studios in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin with the vocals sang by Irish trad artist Aoife Ní Fhearraigh.

The song itself was written by Rika Muranaka - who'd go on to write music for such games like Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty - with additional arrangement by David Downes, who was a co-founder and musical director for Celtic Woman. Not only that, the song itself was engineered by Philip Begley, who worked with the likes of Daniel O'Donnell, Mary Black, Clannad, and Christy Moore.

Who knew Solid Snake was a big fan of Irish trad music, eh?
