Although the franchise have lost some of its luster, Resident Evil is still easily the best horror franchise in gaming history.
Of particular note is the impressive run from Resident Evil 4 to Resident Evil 6, which took the series in a new direction whilst still retaining the elements that made it great. Sure, the story was bonkers as all hell, but they were cracking experiences nonetheless. With that in mind, Capcom has finally given the people what they want and slated Resident Evil 4 through 6 for a HD remastering on current-gen consoles.
Resident Evil 4 was, upon its original release, was only supposed to be released on the Nintendo GameCube. In fact, Resident Evil 4's director, Shinji Mikami, reportedly said he'd rather have his head removed with a chainsaw than see it released on any other platform.
Naturally, that didn't happen and Resident Evil 4 went on to become one of the most ported games in the franchise's history.
So, to the release dates. The most recent game, Resident Evil 6, is slated for a March 29th release whilst Resident Evil 5 and 4 will be released in the summer and autumn respectively.
There's no confirmed dates for either of those two, but they're clearly still working on the remastering of them both. It's not yet known if they'll be sold in hard copies or if they're download-only - our best guess is they'll be download-only for the moment with some sort of 'Ultimate' edition released in a physical form in the winter, to tie in with Christmas sales.
So, are we excited? Absolutely. The prospect of playing a HD version of Resident Evil 4 is too good not to be.
