It's worth pointing out that it's possible to do this if you happen to a be a world-class speedrunner and have spent years of year life dedicated to working out exploits in a game that was released over 30 years ago.
A new world record has been set for 'Super Mario Bros.' and is likely to be the longest-lasting one for some time, as the record set is now on par with a tool-assisted speedrun. What's that, you ask? Well, in a nutshell, a tool-assisted speedrun is where you essentially have a computer play the game as perfectly as possible. You teach the program where to jump, when it should jump, what sprite it should land on, and make it use every possible glitch or exploit in the game to ensure that it reaches the end of the game in the fastest possible time.
Whenever you see those speedrun videos and the word 'TAS' in the title, that's what you're seeing - a program made by a person that's been trained to play the game as quickly as possible. It's why their reactions are so fast, how it's able to understand and anticipate every beat of the game - simply because every single aspect of the game has been funneled into it and it plays it because it knows every beat of it. The best possible time done using this method on 'Super Mario Bros.' is 4 minutes and 55 seconds.
This guy, Kosmicd12, has now managed to be just as fast as a computer. Take a look.
Now, if you're thinking to yourself, "Oh, he cheated and he used the Warp Zones and he used glitches," that's allowed in speedrunning. Again, the objective is to use every possible exploit in the game to make it to the end as fast as possible. As for his controls, if you look at the video, his controller is actually being monitored and you can see all the inputs he makes as he goes along.
Not only that, the whole subculture in speedrunning is so regulated that it's practically like a sport - people check records, they're only allowed use certain ROMs - that's the files for the games themselves - and so on. Simply put, cheating on this isn't a possibility.
And to think, some of us could barely make it to the fifth level in this game.
