DLCs in fighting games are very often limited solely to either character skins, new characters, or some kind of arena list expansion.

'Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath' is clearly new ground for both fighting games and for the franchise itself, but the real question is whether or not anyone actually asked for it in the first place. The biggest selling point for 'Aftermath' is undoubtedly the new three new (well, for this game anyway) characters and the new single-player campaign.

Taken individually, they're both worthy of being added to your download queue and it's not very often that fighting games get any kind of extension in their campaign mode. Of course, 'Mortal Kombat' in general is famous for its convoluted storylines, intersecting timelines, and knowing nods to its own twisted history.

Here, it's no different. The single-player campaign picks up right after the events of 'Mortal Kombat 11' and attempts to tie some of the loose strands while lining itself up for the inevitable sequel. The cutscenes are well-staged and the story, if you're following it, does have some intriguing twists to it that will no doubt surprise hardcore fans.

Bringing back actor Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa for Shang Tsung - having played him in the '90s live-action movie - and making him the central character of the new campaign was a masterful touch, even if it's about the same as any other single-player campaign from NetherRealm Studios.

New characters are folded into the story and you're given an opportunity to try and break your controller by using characters you'd typically avoid or have an issue with to progress throughout. The voice acting and the story is enjoyable enough, but is it enough to rush out and download this? It depends, really.

It's the same with the new characters. While they're all relatively similar to their previous incarnations and having Robocop voiced by Peter Weller is a fun touch, you're not left with much else here or reason enough to fork out €49.99 for the expansion and the Kombat Pack Bundle, which comes with Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Terminator T-800, Sindel, The Joker & Spawn.

Odds are if you're even remotely tempted by this, the price doesn't bear in your thinking and if that's the case, then happy fighting to you and yours, but for those who bought 'Mortal Kombat 11' and played it out as much as they could and moved on, this might be of interest - if it was on sale at half-price.
