Brian Gormley (born in New York in 1959) is one of the most illustrious American painters to grace the shores of the Liffey. A heir of abstract expressionism and of the graffiti art of 1980s New York, he has shown in the most prestigious galleries in Dublin and abroad, from IMMA to the Norse Institute in Vienna. In January 2025 he will be taking over the dark walls of GalleryX with a collection of black on white works, mostly on paper. These works are produced through a highly instinctive and sometimes trance-like process, obliquely inspired by the visual language of Japanese calligraphy, by the doodling techniques of artists like Keith Haring, by Kandinsky's airy compositions, and by the stark monochromes of De Koening, Kline, or even Capogrossi.
