From James Joyce’s Dubliners, as part of the Bloomsday Festival 2025.
Adapted and directed by Jim Roche and Liam Hourican. Starring Jim Roche and Liam Hourican. Keyboard and violin: Feilimidh Nunan & Clarinet: Conor Sheil. These two short stories from Joyce’s debut work are vivid ‘slices of life’ in early 20th century Dublin, revealing a society in paralysis, desperately awaiting change.
Stunningly accompanied by live music, we follow a pair of Dublin characters portrayed in immaculately detailed scenes: In Counterparts, a frustrated law clerk is determined to have a big night’s drinking, while in A Little Cloud, a sensitive soul is thrown by a meeting with an old university friend back from London. At once funny and tragic, the stories are populated with an array of colourful characters who, despite the bowler hats and Edwardian collars, remain entirely contemporary. Ages 12+ 60 minutes.
