The Return of Martin Guerre (1982) is set in France during the Hundred Years' War. Imagining herself a widow, Bertrande (Nathalie Baye) is astonished when her husband Martin Guerre (Gerard Depardieu) returns after nine years. He looks like her husband and sounds like her husband, and certainly has considerable knowledge of their relationship and the village in which they grew up. Based on an account written by the trial judge, Jean de Coras (Roger Planchon) in 1560 and its medieval setting authentically produced, this is one of the best historical films of the past fifty years.
