Join UCD Imagine Science Film Festival, in partnership with the Ambassade de France, for our opening night screening and festivities with guest speaker Prof Cedric Villani. A graduate of the prestigious École normale supérieure de Paris, Villani obtained his doctorate under the supervision of Pierre-Louis Lions at Paris-Dauphine University. He was awarded the Fermat and Henri Poincaré prizes in 2009 followed by the Fields Medal in 2010, is the director of the Institute Henri Poincaré, and is on the faculty at Université de Leon. We are delighted that Villani will launch the inaugural UCD Imagine Science Film Festival and take part in a post screening discussion with internationally renowned writer/director team of Fermat’s Room, Rodrigo Sopena and Luis Piedrahita.
Fermat’s Room is an intriguing, pacey thriller. Four mathematicians, unknown to each other, are invited by a mysterious host on the pretext of solving a great mathematic enigma. Each character is given a famous mathematician’s pseudonym and the invitations they receive are signed by 'Fermat'. The group of four: a scholar famous for having proved Goldbach's Conjecture; a mathematician recluse, disillusioned with life; an engineer who disdains pure maths; and a beautiful young woman, obsessed by mathematics and who guards a bitter secret,  find themselves trapped  in a shrinking room. The race is on to find out what connects them and why someone might want to murder them
