After the poor showing of Terminator: Genisys with both critics and audiences alike, the fate of Sarah Connor and her robotic companion is uncertain.
It was quietly announced yesterday that the follow-up to Terminator: Genisys has been pulled from its release schedule to make way for the Baywatch film - yes, really - with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The original plan was to have a sequel to Terminator: Genisys released on May 19th, 2017 with another sequel to follow in 2018 with the rights reverting back to James Cameron in 2019.
Unless a film goes into production pretty soon, it's entirely possible that the rights will go back to James Cameron without another film being made. For his part, James Cameron said he was a fan of Terminator: Genisys and publicly stated that fact in a video released just before its release.
Cameron's plate is pretty full at the moment, what with the Avatar sequel currently in pre-production and gearing up for a 2017 release date. Therefore, it's unlikely that he's waiting in the wings to take back Terminator and give us that sequel to Judgement Day we've all been hankering for.
In the meantime, we'll have to wait and see what happens if another release date is pencilled in for the Genisys follow-up.
