The 66-year-old also described Harvey Weinstein as a ‘ferocious bully’.
Gabriel Byrne was in Dublin to collect a Lifetime Achievement Award at the IFTA’s this week and dropped into The Late Late Show to discuss, amongst other things, the recent scandals of sexual abuse in Hollywood.
He said he disagreed with Liam Neeson who caused controversy with his appearance on the show several weeks ago with his comments on the #MeToo movement.
“I love Liam. I’ve been a friend of his for many, many years. Everybody is entitled to their opinions. But what I would say is that the movement hasn’t gone far enough.”
“I think the pendulum has been so far in the opposite direction for so long, where you’ve had centuries and centuries of women silenced, discriminated.”
“When they say witch-hunt, I don’t like that word because witch-hunt was about women being burned alive because they were rumoured to be in some way going against the system.”
“People who are saying that it’s gone too far, I think it’s a way of trying to stop it, trying to keep it contained, ‘we get what you’re saying, now go away.’”
“What has to happen is that the women’s movement needs to be resurgent. If this movement dies out with simply #MeToo, then I don’t think it’s going to do a great deal of good in the long run.”
“What we’re talking about in the end is human rights. And we’re talking about 50 per cent of the population of the world. And we’re talking about our sisters, wives, mothers, daughters.”
