Although it's been a disappointing summer for all the major studios, there's been some horrendously bad showings at the box office.
Chief amongst them has been Ice Age 5: Collision Course and, sadly perhaps, Paul Feig's all-female reboot of Ghostbusters. Two full weeks after its release, the reboot hasn't yet managed to recoup its budget from either the US box-office or the international box-office.
As we reported some time ago, Ghostbusters wasn't screened in China - the world's second largest film market - due to strict propaganda laws and, well, the fact that Ghostbusters doesn't have much cultural impact there. With a production budget of $144 million, Ghostbusters has only managed to secure a total of $128,231,019 during its two week run, according to Box Office Mojo.
As expected, the split is heavily weighted towards the US box-office, where it made a total of $92,066,666 in its first two weeks. That makes for a loss of $15,768,981 for Sony Pictures, who have nevertheless remained positive about the film and have informally committed themselves to a sequel.
Internet hatred aside, Ghostbusters was received warmly enough by critics, with Kate McKinnon being the clear standout of the film. Whether or not we'll actually get to see a sequel with the Ghostbusters remains to be seen, as Sony took quite a gamble on resurrecting the property.
