Although there were some rumours that a spinoff series with Johnny Sack was in the works during The Sopranos' initial run, it never materialised and the HBO series ended how we all remember - with a straight to black screen.

However, Deadline has reported in the past hour that creator / showrunner David Chase is now preparing a prequel movie called The Many Saints Of Newark, and will be set during the '60s during the famous Newark riots. There's no word yet on plot or the like, but undoubtedly the film will most likely feature younger versions of Uncle Junior, Livia Soprano and, of course, Tony's father Johnny Boy Soprano.

Chase is understood to be writing the screenplay with Lawrence Konner, who worked on the original series and HBO's other gangster epic, Boardwalk Empire. There's no word yet on casting or who'll be in the director's chair, but given how undeniably successful The Sopranos was during its initial run, there won't be any trouble in finding the talent they need to fill out the ranks.

Confirming the news, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich called Chase "a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film."

No release date has been slated as of yet.
