Some good news to brighten our Wednesday morning.
The Independent Spirit Awards, as the name suggests, celebrates the work of independent films and filmmakers and takes place the night before the Academy Awards in March. They're also used as a key indicator for the Oscars, which is excellent news for two young Irish actors.
Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for an ‘Indie Spirit’ for her lead role in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird while Keoghan has got the nod for his performance alongside Colin Farrell in The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Both face stiff competition, however. In the Best Female Lead category Ronan faces off against Salma Kayek, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, Regina Williams and Shinobu Terajima. In the Best Supporting Male category, meanwhile, Keoghan will be competing with Armie Hammer, Nnamdi Asomugha, Sam Rockwell and Benny Safdie.
There was also a Best Screenplay nod for In Bruges writer and director Martin McDonagh, who was nominated for his Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri script.
John Mulaney and Nick Kroll will host the awards on March 3rd. Check out the full list of nominations here.
