Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes thinks that none of the internet favourites will be the next James Bond.

The likes of Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and Tom Hardy have all been mooted by fans as possible candidates to takeover from Daniel Craig when he decides its time to hand in his Walther PPK but Mendes thinks that whoever is chosen for the role will surprise you.

“It’s not a democracy,” Mendes said according to The Telegraph. “It’s not The X Factor, it’s not the EU referendum, it’s not a public vote. Barbara Broccoli chooses who’s going to be the next Bond: end of story. I can guarantee whatever happens with it, it will not be what you expect."

Bookies have recently suspended betting on Tom Hiddleston to become the next Bond after he was reportedly spotted having lunch with both Mendes and Broccoli but a wildcard was thrown into the mix last week with reports that Billy Elliot himself Jamie Bell was also being considered.

Bell certainly would not be what fans expect but as Mendes pointed out, neither was Craig when he got the role.

“Public support for Daniel [Craig] was zero. It was her saying ‘that man over there is going to change the whole thing, I’m going to cast him.‘”

It also needs to be pointed out that Craig has yet to officially announce that he won't be continuing in the role despite his comments last year that he'd rather slash his wrists than do another one.
