Although the future of the DC Expanded Universe appears to be in a constant state of flux with rumours surrounding Superman and Henry Cavill, Joaquin Phoenix and 'Joker', not to mention Jared Leto's Joker, one part of it that appears to be working is Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn.
Robbie's performance in the role was one of the few shining moments in the otherwise awful 'Suicide Squad', so it makes sense that the character's being spun off into 'Birds Of Prey'. Deadline reported late last night that Mary Elizabeth Winstead, last seen in the third season of 'Fargo', and 'Friday Night Lights' alum Jurnee Smollett-Bell have now both signed on to play Huntress and Black Canary respectively.
Plot details are light, but it's understood that the trio are squaring off against a criminal mastermind who's yet to be confirmed. Rumours suggest that Black Mask, who's been a major comic-book villain and featured in the 'Arkham Origins' videogame, will be that villain, though nothing's been confirmed as of yet.
Per Deadline's report, Winstead faced competition from Sofia Boutella from 'The Mummy', Cristin Milioti of 'HIMYM' fame, and 'The Leftovers' breakout Margaret Qualley - whilst the role of Black Canary came down to either Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
'Birds Of Prey' is set for release on February 7th, 2020.
