Following the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey, Ridley Scott, Sony Pictures and the producers on 'All the Money in the World' have made the radical move to recast Spacey's role just six weeks out from the film's scheduled release date.
Per Deadline, director Scott and producers Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas have agreed to recast Spacey's role in the film, with Christopher Plummer stepping in to shoot scenes that the production aims to have ready for the film's scheduled release in the U.S. on Decemeber 22nd.
According to Deadline:
This comes on the heels of the decision to pull the film from the prestige closing night slot of the AFI Festival. That move resulted after a weekend of back and forth, with Scott and Friedkin in particular incensed that the sordid allegations against Spacey might doom a film that Scott dropped everything to direct, and on which so many people worked hard and did not deserve to see the results hobbled in the marketplace because of the taint of scandal. So they took control of the narrative. Scott is a maverick, and didn’t shrink under the pressure to re-stage the key scenes involving J Paul Getty, the oilman who refused to pay a ransom after his grandson, John Paul Getty III was kidnapped.
Spacey's work is said to have only taken eight to ten days to shoot, so the turn around time is doable but the decision is unprecedented in Hollywood and adds a significant degree of attention to the film, both in terms of marketing and how audiences will react at the box office.
'All the Money in the World' is set for release in Irish cinemas on January 5th, 2018.
